Bali is one of the smaller islands of the Indonesian archipelago, but has a great geographical diversity. Mount Agung with its 3100m is the highest peak of the island. Mount Bautur, with its 1717m, is still active and offers a magnificent view of the lake from its caldera. The interior part is dominated by mountains and volcanoes with numerous rice terraces. The coasts have either beautiful beaches of white sand or a volcanic coast. The Balinese are mostly Hindus with ancient animist traditions still very much alive. Very close to nature, they spend considerable time with offerings and prayers dedicated to the gods and other deities. A multitude of altars can be seen and placed near a tree, a river or at the intersection of a crossroads to appease evil spirits. The temples, meanwhile, are innumerable, since each house has one. The ceremonies, Balinese festivals and rites mark the life of every day. Each Balinese saw different rites of passage such as teeth grinding, wedding and cremation which gives rise to magnificent processions.
